Melissa Papel is a Turkish/French actress who is known for her prominent roles such as the “Gülsüm” character on the legendary TV show “Farewell Balkans“, which charmed  -and brought tears to- the Turkish and Balkan audiences between 2007-2009.

Most recently, Melissa was in an exciting music video with Kosovan rapper Gashi for his song “Mama” featuring Sting.

Melissa Papel 2007-2009 yıllarında Türk ve Balkan izleyicilerini büyüleyen -ve gözyaşlarına boğan- efsanevi dizi Elveda Rumeli’deki “Gülsüm” karakteri gibi hafizalarda kalan rolleriyle bilinen Türk/Fransiz kökenli bir oyuncu. 

Yakin zamanlarda Melissa, Kosovali rapçi Gashi’nin Sting ile beraber seslendirdiği “Mama” (anne) sarkisinin müzik klibinde yer aldi.

“This is a collaboration to remember for life,” says Melissa. “Gashi is from Albania and I have been there many times while I was shooting “Farewell Balkans” in Macedonia, so I have strong ties with that region, and it felt nice to work with an artist from there, which I think reflected very positively on our work as well. Also, it is such an accomplishment for an artist from the Balkans to have a song with Sting - it was an inspiring set.” 

Another source of inspiration? The dress that Melissa is wearing in the video belonged to her grandmother who wore it in the 80s, and coincidentally Gashi’s album is also named “1984”.

Baska bir ilham kaynagi daha? Melissa’nin klipte giydigi elbise büyükannesine aitmis ve bu kiyafeti 80’li yillarda giymis, tesadüfe bakin ki Gashi’nin albümünün ismi de “1984”.

“I used to sing and perform for my grandma when I was a kid,” recalls Melissa. “I got to “play her” and in her very own dress, so this was a special and emotional project for me.”

Born and raised in Paris, France, to a Turkish mother and a French father, Melissa blends several different cultures and, very impressively, speaks French, Turkish, English, Spanish, and Italian, as well as some Russian.  

At only 15-years-old, Melissa left Paris, and moved (on her own!) to the other side of the world: Sydney, Australia, where she learned English. After attending 3 years of theater classes at “Cours Florent”, the most famous acting school in France, the beautiful actress moved to Vancouver, Canada, in 2005, where she studied at the "Acting for Film and Television" program of the Vancouver Film School (VFS).

She has also lived in Macedonia, it was actually during this time that she acted in “Farewell Balkans” with a total of 35 episodes, and in Istanbul/Turkey where she hosted the weekly TV show “ The World of Cycling” (78 episodes) on TRT, the Turkish National Television Network.

Besides the Television series and shows, Melissa has also been in several feature films, including "The Precinct", which represented its country (Azerbaijan) at the 2011 Academy Awards, "Smyrn-Of" which was released in theaters in Turkey in 2010, "Discarded", shot in Los Angeles in 2013, and "Bensiz" (Without Me") released in theaters in Turkey in May 2014. She was more recently in other features, such as “Cash Collectors”, starring Michael Madsen (Kill Bill) and Samy Naceri (Taxi), to be released in 2021, “Run", a Nigerian film by Theo Upkaa, and “Escape Artist”, produced by Only Now Existing.

Melissa Makedonya’da da yaşamış ve iste bu dönemde toplam 35 bölümle “Elveda Rumeli” dizisinde yer almis. Istanbul/Turkiye’de yasadigi sirada da TRT Spor’da ulusal yayin yaparak 78 bolum süresince haftalik “Bisiklet Dunyasi” programinin sunuculuğunu yapmiş.

Televizyon dizilerinin yani sira, Melissa uzun metrajlı filmlerde de oynamış. 2011 yılında ülkesini Oscarlarda temsil eden Azerbaycan yapimi Sahe (The Precinct), Türkiye'de 2010 yılında gösterime giren Off Karadeniz (Smyrn-Of), 2013’te Los Angeles’ta çekilen Discarded ve Türkiye'de Mayis 2014’te sinemalara gelen Bensiz (Without me) bunlardan bazilari. Melissa also directs her own short films and has attended several festivals around the world where she won awards for her work. She was also seen in the short film ”Thunder Road”, which won the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance 2016.

Melissa has been residing in the City of Angels since May 2013, where she has been working on various film projects including Hollywood-based and other national and international projects. 

 I feel very lucky to have met her during a private gathering organized by Lucie, our common and lovely French friend who also lives in the City of Angels with her beautiful family. (Lucie, if you are reading this, you are awesome and we miss you!) With her high energy, vibrant personality and eclectic beauty, Melissa immediately captivated the room.  You can imagine my surprise when I found out that she was half-Turkish and half-French. (She got the best parts of both sides: friendliness of the Turkish culture and the matchless elegance of the French people!)

From working as a prominent voice over artist for major brands such as Apple, Google, and Fuji, to attending film premieres on the other side of the continent, and to writing/directing and producing her own projects, you can see Melissa living the “Los Angeles dream” through a multitude of activities.

Personally speaking, one of her most powerful projects that left a long-lasting and deep impact on me is her 2016 short film “BlinDate” which she directed, co-wrote and co-starred in. I don’t want to reveal too much here about this must-watch short film but let me just say that, as the name of the film suggests, it’s about a blind date between two very different characters and things take an unexpected turn. This film, very deservingly so, earned Melissa nominations at the Romford International Film Festival (UK) as well as the world-renowned Cannes Film Festival as part of their Festival International du Film sur le Handicap (FIFH) section.

With her multicultural background, eclectic personality and unique talent, I thought that Melissa would be the perfect person to launch our blog’s The 10 Question Ultimate LA Snapshot section with – which will also be known as Angeleno of the Month.

Melissa ayni zamanda kendi kisa filmlerini de cekiyor ve dünyanin cesitli yerlerinde katildigi festivallerde odüller kazanmis. 2016 yilinda unlu Sundance Film Festivalinde Büyük Jüri Ödülünü (Grand Jury Prize) kazanan Thunder Road da dahil oldugu projelerden.

Melissa Mayıs 2013’ten beri yaşadığı melekler şehrinde Hollywood-bazli, ulusal ve uluslararasi filmler dahil olmak uzere cesitli projeler uzerinde calismaya devam ediyor.

Kisisel olarak belirtmem gerekirse, Melissa’nin benim üzerimde uzun soluklu ve derin bir etki birakan en etkili projelerinden birisi de 2016 yılında yönettiği, yazarlardan biri olarak görev yaptığı ve oynadigi kisa film “BlinDate” (Randevu) oldu. Mutlaka görülmesi gereken bu kisa filmin konusunu burada çok fazla aciga vurmak istemiyorum ama şunu söyleyebilirim ki – isminin de ima ettigi gibi- film birbirinden cok farkli iki karakterin “tanışma randevusu” hakkinda ve olaylar beklenmedik bir şekilde gelişiyor. Bu film, çok hak edilmis bir bicimde, Melissa’ya İngiltere'deki Romford Uluslararasi Film Festivali'nde ve dünyaca ünlü Cannes Film Festivali’nin International du Film sur le Handicap (FIFH) kategorisinde adaylıklar kazandırdı.

 The 10 Question Ultimate LA Snapshot with Melissa Papel

 1. What three adjectives would you use to describe Los Angeles? 

 Eclectic, magical, surprising.

 2. How did being in Los Angeles affect you during such a history-in-the-making time amidst COVID-19 and Black Lives Matter movements?

I have to be honest with you, I am very saddened by what's happening and by the division that this virus has created between people. I am not only deeply affected by all the people who lost their lives, but also by the nature of people's behaviors, caused by divergent and belligerent opinions, all of which have emerged during this pandemic -  and they can be very frustrating sometimes.

Different attitudes of people and friends towards covid-19, the “end” of the film industry and commercial shoots, and the inevitable chaos it has created in our lives – all have been tough so far.

In a way, I feel like I'm wasting my youth and what's supposed to be the best years of my life. The climax of my life!

However, I was able to find some positive in all this. First of all, it gave me enough time to do the things that I needed to do. For instance, I was able to finish writing the pilot of the TV series I've been developing for the past two years. Not only that, but I already completed my fifth and final draft, and I'm very proud of it! 

I was also able to focus on myself more. I work out every day, teach my talking bird Kiwi some new words and phrases, walk in my neighborhood and discover some amazing areas, read other people's scripts etc. But I haven't set foot in a restaurant in six months now, and I really miss that, as well as all the networking events and film festivals and everything that LA has to offer!

 As for the BLM movement, I support it 100% and I feel lucky to be able to witness this historic new page of a long-term battle. I really believe that it may truly change things this time, and I cannot wait to live in a world where one's skin color doesn't define who they are as a human being.

 3. What do you like most about Los Angeles? 

What I love the most is that each neighborhood feels like a different world! They're all so different from each other, and you can pick the one that fits your mood each day. Beverly Hills is posh, DTLA is trendy, Santa Monica is the typical Californian postcard, Venice is another planet altogether, West Hollywood is party land, Los Feliz is hipster, Burbank is where the studios are, Malibu is relaxing, and so on!

 I also love the fact that LA is truly the land of opportunities. Every person you meet here has a unique style, an idea, a project, a concept that they're working on. We're all dreamers who want to achieve big things, and we're constantly surrounded by incredibly creative people from all over the world.

And you'll never be bored in LA because there's always something to do, a museum to go to, a new art exhibit, a networking event, a festival, a contest, a special screening, a new hiking trail to discover... you name it!

But what I probably love the most is that it's one of the only cities in the world that truly combines work and leisure. You can have a huge meeting with a very important person in the morning and go to the beach in the afternoon, and all this with the sun shining above your head year-round!

4. What do you like least about Los Angeles, and how can they be improved? 

 I don't want to sound too cliché but I'm definitely not a fan of the constant traffic here. However, I used to live in Istanbul so it's pretty mild compared to the traffic there! Maybe another thing that I dislike, or that could definitely be improved, is the fact that there are almost no restaurants/cafes/businesses on the beach, where you can just rent a lounge chair for the day and order drinks and food all day while getting a tan and reading a book (like on Mediterranean beaches).

1.  Los Angeles’i tarif etmek icin hangi “üc sifati” seçerdiniz?

Eklektik, büyüleyici ve şaşırtıcı.

2. Covid-19’un ve Black Lives Matter (Siyahlarin Hayati Onemlidir) gibi akımların hiz kazandigi ve adeta tarihin yazimina tanik oldugumuz böylesi bir donemde Los Angeles’ta olmak sizi nasil etkiledi? 

Dürüst olmam gerekirse, tüm bu olanlardan ve virüsün insanlar arasinda yarattiği bölünmelerden dolayi cok uzgunum. Sadece hayatini kaybeden insanlar icin degil üzgünlüğüm, ayni zamanda insanlarin pandemi sirasinda kendini gösteren kutuplaşmaci ve münakaşaci tutumlarindan kaynaklanan davranma sekilleri de cok sinir bozucu olabiliyor bazen.

İnsanların ve arkadaslarimizin covid-19 konusundaki farkli tavirlari, film endüstrisinin ve reklam çekimlerinin sonunu getirmesi ve hayatimizda yarattigi kacinilmaz karisikliklar yuzunden su ana kadar zor bir surec oldu.

Bir bakima sanki gencligimi ve hayatimin en guzel olmasi gereken yillarini sanki boşa harciyormuşum gibi hissediyorum. Hayatimin doruk noktasini!

Yine de, tum bu olanlarda bazi pozitif seyler bulmayi basardim.  Öncelikle yapmak istedigim seyler konusunda yeterli vakit bulmami sagladi. Mesela son iki senedir uzerinde calistigim bir TV dizisinin pilot bolumunu bitirdim. Sadece bitirmekle kalmadim, besinci ve son nüshayı da tamamladim ve bununla gurur duyuyorum!

Kendime daha fazla odaklanma firsati da buldum. Her gun egzersiz yapiyorum, konuşma kabiliyetine sahip olan kusum Kiwi’ye yeni kelimeler ve ifadeler ogretiyorum, yaşadığım semtte yürüyorum ve harika bolgeler kesfediyorum, diger insanlarin senaryolarini okuyorum vs. Ama tam alti aydir bir restorana adim atmadim ve bunu gerçekten ozluyorum - ayni sekilde çevremi genisletmek icin etkinliklere gitmeyi, film festivallerini ve LA’in bize sunduğu her şeyi de!

Black Lives Matter/Siyahlarin Hayati Onemlidir hareketine gelecek olursak, bu akimi %100 destekliyorum ve uzun zamandir devam eden bu mücadelenin tarihi yeni sayfasina tanıklık edebildigim icin kendimi sansli hissediyorum. İnaniyorum ki, bu sefer bu hareket degisiklik yaratabilir ve insanlarin derisinin renginin onlarin kim olduklarini tanimlamadigi bir dunyada yasamak icin sabirsizlaniyorum.

3. Los Angeles ile ilgili en cok neyi seviyorsunuz?

En cok sevdigim sey her semtin neredeyse baska bir dünyaymis gibi hissettirmesi! Hepsi birbirinden cok farkli ve her gün o anki modunuza uyan bir tanesini seçebilirsiniz. Beverly Hills gosterisli, Los Angeles şehir merkezi cok revacta, Santa Monica tipik California kartpostali, Venice basli basina bambaska bir gezegen, West Hollywood party bolgesi, Los Feliz hipster, Burbank stüdyolar şehri ve Malibu cok rahatlatici. Liste uzar gider!

Los Angeles’in firsatlar yeri olmasini da cok seviyorum. Burada tanistiginiz herkesin kendine ozgu bir stili, fikri, projesi veya üzerinde calistigi konsepti var. Hepimiz büyük seyler basarmak isteyen hayalperestleriz ve devamli olarak dünyanın her yerinden gelen inanilmaz yaratici insanlarla çevriliyiz. 

 Ve Los Angeles’ta asla sıkılmazsınız cünkü daima yapacak birsey var – gidilecek bir müze, yeni bir sergi acilisi, networking etkinligi, festival, yarisma, ozel bir gosterim, keşfedilmeyi bekleyen yeni yürüyüs yollari…Ne dilerseniz! 

Ama sanirim en cok sevdigim şey dünyada is hayati ile eğlenceyi basarili bir sekilde birlestiren nadir şehirlerden biri olmasi. Sabah saatlerinde cok önemli birisi ile büyük bir toplantıya girebilir ve ogleden sonrayi sahilde geçirebilirsiniz - ve tum bunlari yaparken de sene boyunca guneş tepenizde parliyor olacak.

4. Los Angeles ile ilgili en az sevdiginiz şey nedir ve nasil düzeltilebilir?

Kulaga klise gelmek istemiyorum ama buradaki devamli trafiğin hayrani degilim. Ama eskiden İstanbul'da yaşamış birisi olarak yine de trafik oraya kıyasla cok hafif sayilir!  

Sevmedigim ve düzeltilebilecek bir baska sey ise plajlarda (Akdeniz sahillerinde yaptigimiz gibi) günübirlik şezlong kiralayip, icki ve yemek ismarlayabilecegimiz ve bir yandan bronzlaşırken bir yandan da kitap okuyabileceğimiz restoranlar, caféler ve isletmelerin neredeyse hic olmamasi.

5. Other than Los Angeles, where would you like to live?  

As you know, I have lived in France, Australia, Canada, Macedonia, Turkey, and here in the U.S. I think that's plenty for a 35-year-old gal like myself! I can't imagine living anywhere else at the moment. And although I do miss France and Turkey sometimes, I'm completely in love with LA and feel like it's become my home! Perhaps when I retire I'll go to some dreamy island, but I still have some time before that happens. 

 6. Do you have any “hidden gems” and personal favorites in Los Angeles that not too many Angelenos might know about? (It can be anything: a secret hiking place, a restaurant, a bookshop etc.)

It’s hard to keep a good place secret in Los Angeles! But one of my favorites is The Malibu Cafe. I really love that place a lot. Surrounded by nature, good vibes, activities, delicious food, and nice decors.

In terms of 'secrets', there used to be something before Covid-19 that not a lot of people knew about. It's a membership called DayAxe and for only $50/ month, it allowed you to spend the day at the nicest hotels' pools and gyms! So, I'd go to the Ritz-Carlton in Marina Del Rey and spend the day by the pool, watching the ocean, or explore other beautiful spots around town. But that feels like another era now and I'm pretty sure the pandemic got the best of that company, too! 

7. Do you have any favorite books, films or TV shows about Los Angeles or that take place in Los Angeles? 

 Oh my god, the TV series 'Californication' is without a doubt my absolute favorite!

8. What’s your typical weekend in Los Angeles? (If possible, both before & after COVID-19) 

 Actually, that's one of the things that I love the most about my job. Since every day is different, I do not really have the notion of weekdays and weekends. But let's say that when I have a day or two off, I like to take little road trips. That's the beauty of California! There are so many places to explore nearby! You can go to the beach and ski the same day! You can get lost in the beauty of the desert, or have a pool break in Palm Springs, attend a fun convention in San Diego, hike by the lake in Big Bear, go for some wine tastings in Temecula or in The Napa Valley, have a crazy weekend in San Francisco, watch the sea lions in Big Sur, or go on a wild shopping spree in one of the numerous outlets outside of the city.

As for my Post-COVID-19 weekends…well…let's just say they're not as fun! I do record a lot of audio books for work, so I usually do that on the weekends. 

9. If you were a neighborhood in Los Angeles, which place would you be and why? 

I would definitely be the Hollywood Hills…Lots of curves, a right amount of glamour, the risk of falling down at every step (because I always take risks in life), unexpected discoveries and turns at every corner (just like the constant discoveries about myself as a human being, and the radical turns I take sometimes), breathtaking views, risks of immense burning fires (just like in my soul), lots of nature and peaceful calm, birds (like my little Kiwi), as well as fantastic parties and industry events!

5. Los Angeles disinda baska nerede yasamak isterdiniz?

Senin de bildiğin gibi daha once Fransa, Avustralya, Kanada, Makedonya, Türkiye ve burada Amerika’da yasadim. Bence bu benim gibi 35 yasindaki bir kiz icin gayet yeterli! Su anda baska bir yerde yasadigimi düsünemiyorum. Ve Fransa ile Turkiye’yi bazen ozlememe ragmen, Los Angeles’a tamamen asigim ve benim evim haline geldigini hissediyorum. Belki bir gün emekli oldugumda ruya gibi bir adaya yerlesirim ama bundan once hala vaktim var. 

6. Los Angeles’ta - çok fazla Los Angeles’linin bilmeyebilecegi “sakli cevherler” ve kisisel favorileriniz var mi? (Hersey olabilir: gizli bir yuruyus yolu, restoran, kitapçı vs.)

Los Angeles’ta iyi bir yeri sir olarak tutmak zor! Ama favori yerlerimden birisi The Malibu Café. Orayi gercekten cok seviyorum. Doga, iyi titreşimler, aktiviteler, lezzetli yemekler ve hos dekorlarla cevrili.

 “Sirlar” demisken Covid-19’dan once cok fazla kimsenin bilmedigi bir sey vardi. DayExe denilen bir üyelik programi ayda sadece $5o’a gunu en guzel otellerin yüzme havuzu ve jimnastik salonunda gecirmenize olanak sagliyordu. Mesela Marina Del Rey’deki Ritz-Carlton’a gidip gunu havuz başında okyanusu seyrederek veya civardaki diger güzel yerleri kesfederek geçiriyordum. Ama şimdi bunlar sanki başka bir donemdenmis gibi geliyor ve pandeminin bu sirketi de etkiledigine eminim!

7. Los Angeles’i konu alan ya da Los Angeles’ta geçen favori kitaplarınız, filmleriniz ya da TV showlariniz var mi?

Aman tanrim, “Californication” dizisi hic süphesiz mutlak favorim!

8. Los Angeles’ta tipik bir hafta sonunuz nasil geciyor? (Mümkünse Covid-19 oncesi ve sonrasi)  

 Yaptigim isin en sevdigim yönlerinden birisi de bu. Her gün farkli oldugu icin hafta içi ve hafta sonu kavramim pek yok. Ama şunu söyleyebilirim calismadigim bir iki gün oldugu zaman kücük yol seyahatlerine çıkmayı seviyorum. California’nin güzelligi de bu. Etrafta keşfedilecek cok fazla yer var. Ayni gün icerisinde plaja ve kayak yapmaya gidebilirsiniz! Çölün güzelliği içinde kaybolabilirsiniz, Palm Springs’de havuz molasi alabilirsiniz, San Diego’da eğlenceli bir fuara katilabilirsiniz, Big Bear’de gol kenarinda yuruyus yapabilirsiniz, Temecula’da ya da Napa Valley’de şarap tatmaya gidebilirsiniz, San Francisco’da çılgın bir hafta sonu geçirebilirsiniz, Big Sur’da deniz aslanlarini izleyebilirsiniz veya sehrin disinda siralanmis sayısız outletlerden birinde alisveris cilginligi yapabilirsiniz. Covid-19’dan sonraki hafta sonlarima gelince…yani…şunu söyleyebilirim ki eskisi kadar eglenceli degil! İsim geregi cok fazla sesli kitap kaydediyorum, hafta sonlarını da genellikle bu kayitlari yaparak geçiriyorum.  

9. Eger Los Angeles’ta bir semt olsaydiniz hangisi olurdunuz ve neden? 

Kesinlikle Hollywood tepeleri olurdum! Pek cok kivrimli yol, dozunda bir şatafat, her adimda düsme riski (cunku hayatta daima risk alirim), her köşede beklenmeyen kesifler ve dönüşler (tipki bir insan olarak kendim hakkımda yaptigim devamli kesifler ve bazi radikal dönüşler gibi), nefes kesici manzaralar, muazzam bir yangin riski (aynen ruhumdaki gibi), yogun bir doga ve huzurlu bir sakinlik, kuslar (benim kucuk Kiwi’m gibi) ve ayni zamanda muhtesem partiler ve film endüstrisi etkinlikleri.

10. Who is your hero in Los Angeles? (Can be a person or a nonprofit doing great work in the community etc.)

Craig Mitchell. He is a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, who trained several homeless people and turned them into real marathon athletes, and even took some of them on races in Italy and around the world. Some of these people were unfortunately destined to die on the streets before they met him. He basically saved these individuals and gave them a real purpose in life, on his own time, running with them every morning, and he keeps doing so. They made a documentary about him titled 'Skid Row Marathon'. It's a must-see, very inspiring and touching production.

10. Los Angeles’taki kahramaniniz kim? (Bu bir kisi olabilir, toplumda harika isler yapan kar amaci gutmeyen bir kurulus olabilir vs.) 

Craig Mitchell. Birkac evsizi idmanlarla eğiterek gercek maraton atletlerine dönüştüren ve bu kisilerden bazilarini İtalya ve dunyanin cesitli yerlerinde yarislara dahi götüren Los Angeles Yuksek Mahkemesi hakimi. Bu insanlarin bir kismi – maalesef – onunla tanışmadan önce sokaklarda ölmeye mahkumdu. Resmen bu kisilerin hayatini kurtardi ve onlara kendi zamanından vererek, her sabah onlarla kosarak hayatta bir amac verdi ve hala daha vermeye de devam ediyor. Onun hakkinda “Skid Row Marathonu” adinda bir belgesel yaptilar. Görülmesi gereken, cok ilham verici ve dokunakli bir yapim.
