…. “In LA anything is possible!” .. “LA'de her şey mümkün!” ….
…. As many of you know, I am very involved with the Film and TV industry in Los Angeles: be it assisting the nonprofit movie theatre American Cinematheque with their annual gala and red carpet activities or be it organizing networking events to create meaningful career and networking opportunities for international Film and TV professionals to succeed in Hollywood. So, when I connected with Atif Afzal aka A-Zal, a young, driven and very talented Film and TV music composer based in New York, and whose music compositions include TV series such as Loki, Ms. Marvel, NCIS: Los Angeles and The Twilight Zone as well as films like Resort to Love, Prague and Monsoon Shootout, I knew I wanted to interview him for my blog right away. I love how his music harmonizes the melodies of the East and the West in a very upbeat, diverse and smooth way.
Overall, it is always very impressive to cross paths with young talents chasing their dreams in the US and I hope you find inspiration from our interview as much as I did!

As someone originally from Turkey and who migrated to Los Angeles, USA, I can personally relate to your story. Can you also tell our readers about your journey –including how you left a rewarding corporate life to pursue your passion– and how you got here?
It all started with a thought process to be and work with the best. And that's what led me to pursue the Hollywood dream. It started way back in 2014 when I came to Los Angeles to interview with Remote Control Productions to assist Hans Zimmer. A few of my films like Monsoon Shootout were nominated at the Cannes Film Festival which really gave me recognition in the international film circuit. I found myself working on independent films all over the world. And finally, after all those years of hard work, I got an opportunity to work on NCIS:Los Angeles. Well, this was the turning point in my career. Corporate life was very secure and definitely heading in the right direction in terms of stability. But, I was more focused on making a life and not a resume. So, I took the plunge! It's been a decade now, and it was definitely the best decision.
What were some of your most proud and (if any) disappointing moments in your journey?
Getting to work with Marvel was one of the best moments of my life and it makes me proud. A boy from another country, who stepped out to follow his heart into the unknown, could find his way to the topmost film studio in the world. You would find a lot of people saying that nothing is impossible, but I actually lived it. The disappointing part of the journey is meeting those people who would take advantage of the fact that you are an artist. But, that's always going to happen, and you need to navigate through the dust.
Your music was featured on numerous Film and TV projects such as Resort to Love, Loki and Ms. Marvel. Do you have a favorite project -- or any memorable moments from these projects?
I personally don't go and watch each and every film of mine in the theater or TV. But, one film I really enjoyed was Resort to Love. It was the first time I was singing in a language totally unknown to me. And, at the same time, I was extremely excited since this film was produced by Alicia Keys. Alicia is one of my favorite singers, and I didn't know I'd get to collaborate with her on this film. That really made it exciting for me!

Ancak bu her zaman olacak ve tozun içinden geçip dogru yolu bulmaniz gerekiyor.
Müziğiniz, Resort to Love, Loki ve Ms. Marvel gibi çok sayıda Film ve TV projesinde yer aldı. Favori bir projeniz veya bu projelerden unutamadığınız bir anınız var mı?
Şahsen her filmimi sinemada ya da televizyonda izlemiyorum. Ama gerçekten keyif aldığım bir film, Resort to Love’di. İlk defa bilmediğim bir dilde şarkı söylüyordum. Aynı zamanda, bu filmin yapımcılığını Alicia Keys yaptığı için çok heyecanlandım. Alicia en sevdiğim şarkıcılardan biri ve bu filmde onunla işbirliği yapacagimi bilmiyordum. …. Do you have a dream project?
17 & 11 Nights, the pop album which I am working on right now is my dream project. Every singer wants to eventually their own story. In my decade long career, I always wrote music to a character. However, in my album, I am the character! It's all about me and my journey. So, this is definitely my dream project and I will be releasing it later this year. The first single from the album will be released in the last quarter of 2022 and I can't wait to bring it out to you guys!
Is there anyone in your life who is a role model or source of inspiration for you?
To be honest, I don't have any role models. When it comes to inspiration, I am most inspired by Ed Sheeran. What inspires me is the truth in his songwriting. His writing and music is raw and straight from the heart. And, you will see a similar truth in my songs too. As an artist, I can't be fake to my audience. So, I am very careful when I am writing my songs and it's highly reflective of my personality.
Can you tell us about your new releases "Phonebook" and "Ride" as well as the driving forces and influences behind them?
Phonebook and Ride are songs from the album 17&11 Nights. At this moment, all I can say is that they are definitely going to make you turn up your volume! I am currently shooting the music video for Ride and it is slated to release in early 2023. Autopilot is another song from the album which is very close to my heart. I hope the audience gives my album the same love they have given to my work in the movies. .. Hayalini kurdugunuz bir proje var mı?
Şu an üzerinde çalıştığım pop albümü 17 & 11 Nights hayalimdeki proje. Her şarkıcı sonunda kendi hikayesini yapmak ister. On yıllık kariyerimde her zaman karakterli bir müzik yazdım. …. If you were to compose a song for Los Angeles, what kind of musical elements would you include to describe the City and why?
If I were to write a song for Los Angeles, I wouldn't really pick a musical instrument for it. Rather, I would write a powerful soprano opera! Los Angeles has so many interesting shades - glamour, glory, dreams, ambitions etc. However, I think the city has the power to change lives. And for me, the soprano opera voice would best demonstrate that character of the city! In my first visit to LA, I landed an interview with Hans Zimmer and also met Oscar winning filmmakers. Anything can happen when you are in LA!!
Any advice for up-and-coming talents who want to pursue their dreams?
I would say dreams only work if you do! Read this every day, and when we talk after 10 years, you would be having a journey of success yourself.
