Years ago, I was working on a women rights related charity gala where we were looking into reaching out to Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon to create increased awareness about our cause by inviting them to our event as both of them were known for being passionate advocates of female empowerment.

My former co-worker (and now great friend) Scott Brumer recommended that we get in touch with Todd Krim – the founder of the Krim Group- who was especially known in Hollywood, Washington and New York circles for connecting nonprofits with celebrities for them to be able to promote their cause with a higher impact.

We talked on the phone a few times and he gave us some great tactics. Unfortunately, our gala didn’t come through and we couldn’t work with him at a full capacity, however, over the course of many years, I remained in touch with him through LinkedIn and witnessed all the wonderful projects he has been working on including various initiatives with Barack and Michelle Obama as well as our current president.

I recently reconnected with Todd because as we are nearing the end of the COVID-19 tunnel, in terms of being able to gather through in-person events again, I look forward to collaborating with him on different charity functions. Until this happens and we report live from our event, I hope you enjoy my dynamic Zoom conversation with him to get to know him better – including finding out more on what he thinks about Turkey.

You left a successful career as a lawyer and formed The Krim Group to help nonprofits partner with celebrities and now you are known as Mr. Charity. Can you tell us about yourself and your journey and how you got where you are?

I was a practicing lawyer for approximately 15 years. Being in Los Angeles, I met a lot of celebrities and at the same time through my work I was invited to many different charity events. I realized that the best way to make these charity events more exciting and interesting would be by bringing celebrities to join me. And then I decided to throw my own charity events because I noticed that there were many great charities out there doing wonderful work that no one has ever heard of – part of it is because it costs money to produce events and the events are more involved than they need to be.

Back in 2003, I started to organize charity events but they were more fun and “young Hollywood” type of events – more like cocktail parties where I would find a nice venue and bring in a liquor sponsor, choose a charity to benefit and then I would select a celebrity to host it. These events were not only entertaining but they were also educational and inspiring. People really enjoyed them, so I started to do these events several times a year. They became so popular that I formed a nonprofit and ran my own foundation for many years where I would produce the events, bring in the money and donate it to different charities. I was doing this while I was still a lawyer, so I did this for about 10 years and it was about giving back and having fun while also being social.

Then the recession hit around 2009-2010 and it wasn’t a good time for raising money or holding charity events so I put my foundation on hold and I went back to my real job and did that for a few years, and then I started to get calls from nonprofits asking for help in getting celebrities for their charities. Instead of being a nonprofit, I formed my own company The Krim Group whose mission was, as you mentioned, to help nonprofits get celebrities to support them because I realized in doing my own celebrity outreach event planning for 10 years that the hardest part was getting the celebrities. I learned the best way to get celebrities involved by doing it, I also learned that there aren’t many people or companies out there that charities can rely on to ask for help to get celebrities. It’s up to the charity to work through their own network of board members, to find out who went to high school with which celebrity and it almost never works out unless you are really lucky. Understandably because it’s not their specialty and celebrities are extremely busy and just to get in touch with them takes a lot of time and effort.

What kind of services does The Krim Group provide and are these services for American nonprofits only or do you assist nonprofits from other parts of the world as well?

The Krim Group is a resource for nonprofits that are looking to connect with celebrities but we also expanded into helping brands as well however for the most part 99% of our work is charity and cause related.

It’s a very broad area. We not only help celebrities support charities via social media but we also get them to support with in person events (when they come back). Over the years, we’ve gotten celebrities like Kathy Bates to host the American Cancer Society Birthday Ball with Katharine McPhee (who just gave birth) to perform at that event and we brought celebrities on social impact trips around the world. We took Zendaya to South Africa in 2015 with UNAIDS, we also took Lucy Hale to Mexico with our client Smile Train. I call the work we do “experiential philanthropy” because it is important for donors or celebrities to experience the philanthropy itself and actually see the work that charity is doing.

We work internationally, we have clients all over the world. For instance, in 2019, in Thailand I had Jameela Jamil participate in an event remotely because her visa hadn’t come through to travel out of the US. Maggie Q was able to fly with me to Thailand, Bangkok to attend a female empowerment summit. That was in November and then October of 2019 I actually took Claire Forlani, the actress, to India for a tuberculosis related conference. I’ve done a lot of work with charities in London as well.

2003 yılında kendi yardım etkinliklerimi düzenlemeye başladım, ancak bunlar daha eğlenceli ve "genç Hollywood" odakli etkinlikler ve kokteyl partileriydi.Guzel bir mekan bulup içki sponsoru getirdikten sonra bagista bulunacagimiz hayır kurumunu ve geceye ev sahipliği yapması için bir ünlü seçiyordum. Bu etkinlikler sadece eğlenceli değil aynı zamanda eğitici ve ilham vericiydi. İnsanlarin gerçekten cok hoşuna gitti, ben de bu etkinlikleri yılda birkaç kez yapmaya başladım. Uluslararası çalışıyoruz, dünyanın her yerinden müşterilerimiz var. Örneğin, 2019'da Tayland'da bir etkinlige Jameela Jamil’in uzaktan katılmasini sagladim çünkü vizesi ABD dışına seyahat etmek için henuz gelmemişti. Maggie Q, bir kadın dayanismasi zirvesine katılmak için benimle Bangkok'a uçabildi. Bu Kasim ayındaydi ve 2019 Ekim'inde aktris Claire Forlani'yi tüberkülozla ilgili bir konferans için Hindistan'a goturmustum. Londra'daki hayır kurumlarıyla da pek çok iş yaptım.

Is your Foundation still active? What happened to it?

The Foundation that I had previously is no longer active. I realized that I was competing with the charities I am helping by being a nonprofit because we don’t need any more nonprofits there are plenty of them, so I closed it down but I actually do have a new foundation that I launched last year to help child refuges through music education and therapy. We are going to start with Syrian refugees and then expand to other countries. I know that Turkey has a lot of Syrian refugees.

What type of challenges did you, The Krim Group (or the nonprofits you work with) experience during COVID-19 and how did you overcome them?

There were lots of challenges. First of all, their in-person events were cancelled so we had to transition to doing stuff online. In fact, I produced one of the very first virtual galas, it was held in April of last year. Things shut down in March and in May we were supposed to have an event in Los Angeles with Eve and The Chainsmokers. Eve was in London and The Chainsmokers were in LA but it wasn’t safe to do anything in person, my client at the time, an organization that primarily helps homeless youth, was going to cancel the event and I urged them to not cancel but to allow the Krim Group to make it a virtual gala and we did it. It was a huge success. Eve hosted from London. We partnered with a company named Looped which does online streaming of events and private meet-and-greets. The event was live and not even pre-recorded. The Chainsmokers accepted their awards live as we sent them to their home. Eve was such a great host, she talked about them on her talk show “the talk” and it was great. Andra Day performed who has been just nominated for an Oscar with her Billie Holliday movie.

It was a way to move forward with the event which made their sponsors happy and it also got their name out there in a different way to a larger audience because if it’s in person it’s limited to people who can physically be there but if it’s online you can tune in from anywhere in the world. That’s the benefit of this new virtual space. You are not limited geographically. We helped a lot of clients including Smile Train with their World Smile Day event – Ciara hosted their event. Gabrielle Union and Kevin Smith recorded a video and Elle King and Jake Miller performed. That was really great.

Vakfiniza ne oldu, hala aktif mi?

Vakfim artık aktif değil. Kâr amacı gütmeyen bir kuruluş olarak faaliyet ederek yardım ettiğim hayır kurumlarıyla rekabet ettiğimi fark ettim çünkü daha fazla vakfa ihtiyacımız yok, onlardan zaten fazlasiyla var, bu yüzden kurumu kapattım ama geçen yıl kurduğum yeni bir vakfım var: müzik eğitimi ve terapi yoluyla sığınmaci cocuklara yardımcı olacagiz, Suriyeli mültecilerle başlayıp daha sonra diğer ülkelere doğru genişleyeceğiz. Türkiye'de de çok sayıda Suriyeli mülteci olduğunu biliyorum.

Siz, Krim Group (veya birlikte çalıştığınız kar amacı gütmeyen kuruluşlar) COVID-19 sırasında ne tür zorluklarla karşılaştınız ve bunların üstesinden nasıl geldiniz?

Çok fazla zorluk yasandi. Her şeyden önce, yüz yüze etkinlikler iptal edildi, bu yüzden internet aktivitelerine geçis yapmak zorunda kaldık. I am originally from Turkey and I read on the internet that you were friends with Kelly Rutherford, who was very popular in Turkey in the early 90s through her iconic role Sam on the soap opera Generations and she even visited Turkey a few times. How did you meet her and did you know she was this popular in Turkey?

I had no idea. Kelly and I met at least 6-7 years ago. We met when I invited her to participate in an event with the United Nations Foundation, I matched her up with Nigel Barker in New York, they both attended the event and we got to know each other, we stayed in touch and became really good friends. We traveled the world together, I absolutely adore her. Maybe we can visit Turkey this summer together, we’d love that. We talked about doing some traveling.

Speaking of Turkey, what do you know about our country?

I know that it has a very rich history and that the people are super friendly. I have seen some photos and Turkey looks stunning. Is there a place called Pamukkale? I definitely want to visit that. I need to learn more. I am the type of person, I don’t want to read too much before I go there, I would like to go and just immerse myself in the culture.

Kendisi birkac kere Turkiye’ye de gelmisti. Onunla nasıl tanıştınız ve Türkiye'de bir zamanlar bu kadar popüler olduğunu biliyor muydunuz?

Hiç bir fikrim yoktu. Kelly ve ben en az 6-7 yıl önce tanistik. Onu Birleşmiş Milletler ile ilgili bir etkinliğe davet ettiğimde bir araya geldik, kendisini New York'ta Nigel Barker ile eşleştirdim, ikisi de etkinliğe katıldılar ve birbirimizi boylece tanımis olduk, iletişimde kaldık ve gerçekten iyi arkadaş olduk. Birlikte dünyayı gezdik, ona bayılıyorum. Belki bu yaz Türkiye'yi birlikte ziyaret edebiliriz, bunu cok isteriz.

Turkiye demisken, ulkemiz hakkinda ne biliyorsunuz?

Çok zengin bir geçmişe sahip olduğunu ve insanların çok cana yakın olduğunu biliyorum. Bazı fotoğraflar gördüm ve Türkiye harika görünüyor. Pamukkale diye bir yer var mı? Kesinlikle orayi ziyaret etmek istiyorum. Daha fazla öğrenmeye ihtiyacım var. Ben bir yere gitmeden önce orasi hakkinda çok fazla sey okuma taraftari degilim, gidip kendim gormek ve yorenin kulturune odaklanmak istiyorum.

You probably have many to choose from since you have impressive experiences, including helping nonprofits under pressure and sometimes with short notice or assisting The White House and Congress as well as First Lady Michelle Obama with various initiatives, but what is your proudest accomplishment?

It is a tough question because there are so many wonderful events and projects that I worked on. Certainly, working the White House, having the opportunity to meet Barack and Michelle Obama as well as the current president was incredible. But I would say one of my proudest accomplishments was working on the Venezuela Aid Life benefit with Richard Branson back in 2019. It was the height of the humanitarian crisis in Venezuela, when they were refusing to let humanitarian aid through the border with Colombia. I helped Richard Branson produce a benefit concert in Colombia to benefit Venezuela. In less the 3 weeks, we raised close to 3 million dollars and produced a major concert that was attended by at least a hundred thousand people maybe even three hundred thousand. When I got involved they didn’t even have a nonprofit set up or anything.

Do you have a message for our readers who are interested in social entrepreneurship?

My advice is just do it. You don’t need to wait. Start by volunteering, getting involved with nonprofits and it just happens. I’ve had several business ideas that were social entrepreneurial related and non-social entrepreneurial related some were successful, some weren’t but if you don’t try, you never know!

Zor bir soru çünkü üzerinde çalıştığım pek çok harika etkinlik ve proje var. Elbette, Beyaz Saray'da çalışmak, Barack ve Michelle Obama'nın yanı sıra su anki başkanla tanışma fırsatına sahip olmak inanılmazdı. Ancak en gurur verici başarılarımdan birinin, 2019'da Richard Branson ile Venezuela Yaşam Yardımı kampanyasi üzerinde çalışmak olduğunu söyleyebilirim. İnsani yardımın Kolombiya sınırından Venezuela’ya geçmesine izin verilmeyen bir donemdi ve Venezuela'daki krizin doruk noktası buydu. Richard Branson'ın Kolombiya'da Venezuela yararına bir yardım konseri yapmasına yardım ettim. 3 haftadan daha kısa bir sürede 3 milyon dolara yaklaştık ve en az yüz bin kişinin hatta belki üç yüz bin kişinin katıldığı büyük bir konser yaptık. Ben bu projeye dahil olduğumda ortada herhangi bir vakif bile yoktu.

Benim tavsiyem gidin ve yapin. Beklemenize gerek yok. Gönüllülükle başlayın ve kar amacı gütmeyen kuruluşlara fikirlerinizle ve projelerinizle dahil olun. Sosyal ve normal girişimcilikle ilgili birkaç iş fikrim oldu ve bazıları başarılıydı, bazıları başarılı olamadı ama denemezseniz, asla bilemezsiniz!

What are your most favorite and least favorite things about Los Angeles -- and how can they be improved?

Least favorite is definitely traffic and it can be improved through a better public transportation system, but since it is Los Angeles, I doubt anyone will use it, so I don’t even know if this would actually be a solution. And also maybe make the streets prettier and more pedestrian-friendly so people are more inclined to walk. New York has such nice wide sidewalks that it inspires you to walk. You are not really inspired to walk in Los Angeles. Maybe instead of investing in subway they should invest in sidewalks.

My favorite thing about LA is the weather and the energy. LA –when there is no covid- has amazing energy.

If you were to choose three words to describe LA, what would they be?

Beautiful, exciting and entrepreneurial.

Los Angeles'la ilgili en sevdiğiniz ve en az sevdiğiniz şeyler nelerdir - ve bunlar nasıl geliştirilebilir?

En az sevdiğim yonu kesinlikle trafigi ve daha iyi bir toplu taşıma sistemi ile iyileştirilebilir, ancak soz konusu sehir Los Angeles olduğu için kimsenin kullanacağından şüpheliyim, bu yüzden bunun gerçekten bir çözüm olup olmayacağını bile bilmiyorum.
